The City
Anyone down to hit the beach after shadowing? If so, Tarragona is the city for you. If you’re an adrenaline junkie, make sure to make a stop at Port Aventura, Spain's largest theme park, right nearby in Salou; plus there are several water parks and a zoo. The beaches offer excellent facilities for water-sports and activities. Inflatable fun such as banana boats add to the entertainment. Sea fishing is popular in this area as well, meaning that the local seafood game is strong.

Hospital Experience
The hospital Sant Pau y Santa Tecla is the oldest hospital of the province, founded in 1171. Today, it counts more than 200 beds and accommodates 32 services, among which are many surgical specialties. Located in the old centre of Tarragona, the hospital currently has more than 200 beds: 177 conventional patient beds, 10 ambulatory major surgery beds, 3 day hospital beds, 9 intensive care beds. In addition to 18 emergency box and 3 pediatric cribs. It also has 6 operating rooms (5 for major surgery and one for deliveries), two smaller surgery rooms and a delivery room.
The Atlantis program was a unique and life-changing experience that allowed me to not only gain a sense of what I am interested in doing in the pre-med track, but to also learn about the culture and traditions of Tarragona.

Weekend excursions and free time to travel.
With its location right on the beach, we would understand if you never wanted to leave Tarragona, even for the weekend. However, if you are looking to explore more of Spain or Europe while abroad, you can take the train to Barcelona, a major European transportation hub, and then hop over to pretty much any destination you can imagine. Catalonia holds a few treasures of its own that you might want to discover, including places like Sitges, Cadaqués, or Manresa.
What will I be allowed to do while shadowing?
While shadowing, you are expected to do just that--be a shadow of your doctor. This means that, while you can ask as many questions as you want, make patient rounds with your doctor, and learn as much as your brain can hold in several weeks, your participation is limited to observation only. We adhere strictly to the AAMC shadowing guidelines, which exist not only for patient safety, but also in your best interests when applying to medical school.
