Milan has long been recognized as a beacon for healthcare, and we are lucky to partner with two of the top hospitals that the city has to offer: Grande Ospedale Metropolitano Niguarda and San Raffaele.
A leading Italian general hospital in Milan, Niguarda Hospital is focused on integrating different medical disciplines and technologies to provide the best healthcare for its population. Inaugurated in 1939, and now with 1,167 beds and over 4,000 professionals, this hospital services 2.5 million outpatients per year with 93,000 ER admissions per year. It is also equipped with an emergency department and trauma center, as well as cancer, transplant, cardio, and mother-child centers.
The San Raffaele Hospital is a university hospital situated in Segrate, the Province of Milan, Italy. It was founded in 1969 and is situated to the northeast of Milan. It is a clinical, scientific, university institution of international importance and specialization for several diseases. The issue of molecular medicine has always been the distinguishing feature of this institution that has focused on understanding the molecular processes and medical applications of molecular biology findings in order to develop innovative therapies for diseases and for the development of technologies in the field of genomics and medical imaging. A wide variety of specialties are offered at the San Raffaele Hospital, with this special focus on molecular medicine. The hospital is accessible through public transportation through the metro and the bus systems, as well as by taxi.

You know what they say, 'an Italian gelato a day keeps the doctor away." Maybe not quite, but you're not there to avoid doctors, right? Keep a tally of how many times you stop here, and let us know!

Weekend excursions and free time to travel.
Milan is a major European transportation hub. Do you know what that means? Planes, trains, and automobiles headed in every which direction to the weekend destination of your dreams. Your weekends are free to spend as you please, so if you’ve got the travel bug then you’re about to become close acquaintances with the Milan airport. Some destinations that might pique your interest: Madrid, Geneva, or Munich. Happy (and safe!) travels!
What will I be allowed to do while shadowing?
While shadowing, you are expected to do just that--be a shadow of your doctor. This means that, while you can ask as many questions as you want, make patient rounds with your doctor, and learn as much as your brain can hold in several weeks, your participation is limited to observation only. We adhere strictly to the AAMC shadowing guidelines, which exist not only for patient safety, but also in your best interests when applying to medical school.
