Destination Overview

Cuenca is a historic city surrounded by two river canyons, with a historic center so beautiful and culturally rich that it is included in the UNESCO World Heritage list. Travel 3 hours to the northeast and you’ll hit Madrid, making Cuenca a perfect escape from the "big city" feeling, and yet close enough to visit on a day trip. If you go about 3 hours in the other direction, you’ll hit the Mediterranean coast. The outskirts of the city boast some of the greenest farmland in Spain, sprawling sunflower fields, and plenty of great hiking.

The City

Cuenca is one of those places that is too big to call a town, but too small to call a city. It is, however, a wonderful location for enhancing your understanding of authentic Spanish culture. Immerse yourself in history, architecture, and culture in any of the many museums and unique restaurants that will broaden your familiarity with the country. Lastly, the city is located high up on the hills, and its exclusive "Hanging Houses" (las casas colgadas), suspended from sheer cliffs overlooking the Huécar river, are definitely a must-see!
