Monastiraki
European afternoons, especially in the summer, tend to be slow. One place you can expect to be busy is Monastiraki, the old town market district and a center for activity in Athens both day and night. Perfect for those few hours between shadowing and a group dinner, Monastiraki features a flea market, large Grecian columns, ruins of the Roman Emperor Hadrian's Library, the Roman Agora and Thission, and the almost completely intact ancient temple of Hephaestus. Your souvenir shopping destination awaits!
Hospital Experience
We partner with a number of large, public hospitals in Athens. These include The Attikon General Hospital, Attica General Hospital (KAT), and Gennimatas General Hospital. While they range slightly in size and location, each are excellently equipped with highly trained and friendly medical and administrative staff to give you a shadowing experience that Hippocrates would be proud of.
The Attikon General Hospital, which opened in 1994, is not only one of the most important hospitals in Greece, but it is also a center for teaching and training of future doctors and a hub for medical research. As a general hospital that is also connected to the university, Attikon General has a wide variety of available specialties and is an excellent place for students to learn and shadow. Located in the northwest part of Athens, the hospital is accessible through public transportation such as bus, taxi, and metro.
Attica General Hospital KAT (or simply KAT Hospital, previously Accident's Hospital "Apostle Paul") was founded in 1949 as a war injury treatment and rehabilitation hospital of the Attica region, and it is located in a northern suburb of Athens: Kifisia. It is one of the biggest hospitals in Attica with over 20 medical departments and a renowned specialization in orthopaedics and trauma. For this reason, it is considered by Greek people as the hospital for accidents and fractures. The excellently equipped medical and administration staff is made up of 1,800 people, all working hard for the best treatment of their patients.
Atlantis offered an experience that I don't think I could have received anywhere else. The amount that I learned in these three weeks about not only the culture of Greeks, but also about the Greek medical system, has changed my view of healthcare in the best way possible. I wouldn't want anyone to pass up this opportunity.

Weekend excursions and free time to travel.
Athens is a major European transportation hub. Do you know what that means? Planes, trains, and automobiles headed in every direction to the weekend destination of your dreams. Your weekends are free to spend as you please, so if you’ve got the travel bug then you’re about to become close acquaintances with the Athens International Airport. Top of your list might be the whitewashed volcanic mountainsides of the Greek Islands. Happy (and safe!) travels!
What will I be allowed to do while shadowing?
While shadowing, you are expected to do just that--be a shadow of your doctor. This means that, while you can ask as many questions as you want, make patient rounds with your doctor, and learn as much as your brain can hold in several weeks, your participation is limited to observation only. We adhere strictly to the AAMC shadowing guidelines, which exist not only for patient safety, but also in your best interests when applying to medical school.
