Almada is a coastal city directly across the river from Lisbon, similar to how Arlington is across the Potomac from Washington, DC. With easy access to the heart of Lisbon, this site will provide in-depth cultural immersion without being far off the map. Like all Portuguese cities, come ready to take in pastel colors, trolley cars, and delish seaside cuisine. Spending a few weeks in Almada in the summer is every tourist’s dream. Couple that with what is sure to be an eye-opening experience in Lisbon’s top hospitals will really round out a life-changing program.

The City
While you can easily go back and forth to Lisbon via metro as often as you please, Almada offers its own full itinerary of sites to see. Inspired by Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, Almada features a Cristo Rei statue looming some 85 meters above the city. Besides thinking for a second that you are in Rio, you might also catch flashes of San Francisco when you see the big red bridge that connects Almada with Lisbon, an almost identical version of the Golden Gate Bridge (built by the same company.) Some of the cheapest flights to Europe land in Lisbon, making your arrival easy and cost-effective.
