ARLINGTON, Virginia —

Nine leading experts in the fields of medicine, medical education and international education will advise Atlantis and help it to continuously improve its physician shadowing programs. According to Chief Academic Officer and Dean of Education, Brian Whalen, who chairs the group, “the purpose of the Atlantis Education Advisors (AEA) is to advise Atlantis on its education program, including advice on curricular and program design, teaching and mentoring of students, assessment of learning outcomes and professional competencies, and program quality improvement.” He added, “we are extremely proud and pleased to have such a distinguished group of experts to advise us on the best ways to advance student learning.”

Atlantis Physician Shadowing programs attract students from over 400 U.S. colleges and universities annually, and are offered in 30+ locations, in ten countries. Students complete over 20 hours of clinical shadowing of a host physician each week, in which they observe patient care and procedures in a wide variety of medical specialties.

Approximately 85% of Atlantis students are pre-med; 15% are nursing and other pre-health professions students. Atlantis programs are in accordance with the Physician Shadowing Guidelines published by the Association of American Medical Colleges.

Joon Kim, Instructor and Director of the Post-baccalaureate Premedical Certificate Program at the Keck Graduate Institute, summed up the important work of the AEA: “I am excited to join a community of committed educators preparing future leaders in medicine with an international approach. Anytime we look beyond ourselves, it is always good for medicine.”
